Mr. Stephen Kalong Ningkan was appointed as first Chief Minister of Sarawak on Monday 22 July 1963 by the British Governor, Sir Alexander Waddell. The British Governor also nominated three people namely, Mr. Teo Kui Seng, Mr. Abdul Taib bin Mahmud and Mr. Ling Beng Siong as members of the Council Negri and to established the new Supreme Council.

KUCHING, July 22: Parti Bumi Kenyalang holds that it is misleading to gazette July 22 as Sarawak Independence Day or Sarawak Day as Sarawak’s independence is a myth.
