Sibu was placed under Movement Control Order (MCO) on January 16 due to the rise of Covid-19 cases. It’s been over a month now and the curve is still rising. However even though the cases are rising to as high as 120 yesterday, Sibu has been released into the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) category.

In Victoria Australia, when 1 case was detected at a quarantine centre, the Victorian government placed Victoria under strict lockdown for 5 days to break the circuit and stop the spread of Covid-19 and its new variant.

Looking at Sibu’s statistics, positive cases are reported from every corner. In my residential area, 9 positive cases have been recorded to date. One of my neighbours was admitted, 2 days ago,to the general hospital while 4 of his fellow traders at the Central Market were quarantined at Laila College after they all tested positive for Covid-19.

In my community, a pastor of a local church, his wife, his parents (admitted to hospital) and 1 of his children all tested positive of Covid-19.

A sister from my church was also admitted to the quarantine centre at Laila College yesterday having tested positive after visiting her mother at the old folk’s home where many residents were infected including her mother.

The processing time at Laila College is way too long. I’m informed that many waited for 12 hours till 1am before arriving in their quarantined room. The frontliners are short handed and are exhausted. The feedback I received was that the frontliners were so overwhelmed that some of them had to take off their masks and gloves to pour sweat out.

I plead with the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) and the Health Ministry to send reinforcements to assist Sibu to better serve her people and relieve our overstretched frontliners from exhaustion.

Sibu and other red zone areas must be placed under strict lockdown until the pandemic’s circuit is broken completely like the first lockdown a year ago. The balancing act between reviving the economy and breaking the circuit is a no brainer. Every country in the world seeks to break the circuit and data has shown that those with strict lockdowns are more successful.

Follow the way Wuhan dealt with the pandemic when it first started. From thousands of reported cases in its 11 million residents at the start of the lockdown on January 23 to a trickle of cases after a month and a complete lift on the lockdown on April 8. All the while the government provided aid which effectively reached all the people and not just a few handful or any specific groups.

There is no other way to stop the spread except strict lockdown as when the pandemic first started a year ago. Both the federal and state governments must be prepared to stand up and be answerable to the people of Sibu.

I urge SDMC and both the State and Federal Governments to send more frontline personnel to Sibu and allocate more funds and aid to Sibu as Covid-19 has spread all over Sibu and is tightening its death grip. Sibu is in the heart of Sarawak and services the smaller communities in the central region. The good and the bad all flow from and into Sibu.

This is no time to make excuses. We are suffering here. SDMC and the governments of the day must come out with a solution immediately. Declaring a state of emergency and doing nothing to assist the people is too cruel!

We the people of Sibu want to see positive and effective actions. Don’t pay us lip service and think that will pacify us. We have heard and seen what the government and SDMC has already implemented and we say it’s not effective and it’s not enough, obviously.

So please go back to the drawing board and send troops and resources before it’s too late.
