Sarawak Government wants to open the floodgates to foreign workers inorder to counter the influx of illegal immigrants who brings the risk of Covid-19 in this pandemic.

On 19 February the Sarawak Government said that it was urging Putrajaya to allow foreign workers to enter the state legally from March 2021 to counter the influx of illegal immigrants who brings the risk of Covid-19 with them (Borneo Post).

According to the report, Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Unggah in his capacity as the SDMC chairman said that “despite numerous operations to curb illegal entry of immigrants from neighbouring Indonesia, some still managed to enter the state through illegal entry points.”

He added that “We have been implementing Ops Benteng and Ops Sapu, but those did not seem to be sufficient, and that’s why we implemented Ops Jala to find illegal immigrants who managed to get through into Sarawak.” Through Ops Jala he said that some illegal immigrants were apprehended.

He then went further to say that bringing in legal immigrants will counter the illegal immigrants from entering Sarawak and hence prevent the spread of Covid-19.

Looking at statistics around the world in this pandemic, there has been no proven data that opening our borders to an influx of foreign workers will curb the spread of Covid-19!

The problem of illegal immigrants entering illegally into Sarawak should be addressed with the better patrolling of our borders and enforcement of existing laws to punish and to deal with the law breakers.

The Victorian government in Australia announced that it will not open its borders to any foreigners until next year at the earliest. China did the same when it sought to eradicate Covid-19 from amongst her populace.

So how can the Sarawak Government justify exposing and putting at risk the whole of Sarawak and her people to a heightened risk of Covid-19 just because our borders cannot be controlled? Shouldn’t the answer to the dealing of illegal immigrants be to increase patrol and enforcement at our borders? I urge the Sarawak Government to tighten our borders at this crucial time and not open it to foreign workers just yet.

The Sarawak Government should encourage the local employers to employ local labourers and workers and provide incentive and financial assistance to the local employers if they contribute towards such employment to reduce the unemployment figures which is on an all time high now.

Our governments, both State and Federal have harped about increased autonomy for Sarawak in their push to be voted into government. Now is the time to show the people that Sarawak is able to have more autonomy and govern itself by ensuring that our very borders that is supposed to protect us is not being trespassed so badly that our government would rather open the floodgates and put us all at risk of a Covid-19 wipeout!
