The Malaysian prime minister, 94-year-old Mahathir Mohamad, has submitted his resignation to the king. The fate of Malaysia's ruling coalition was in doubt, after surprise talks with opposition groups over the weekend. Their focus was on forming a new government that would exclude Mahathir's expected successor Anwar Ibrahim.

WHEN Sarawak Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg flew to Kuala Lumpur yesterday, he was optimistic that the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) coalition he led could play kingmaker in determining the occupants in Putrajaya.
