The non flying of the flag should not be taken as not patriotic but as a precaution against persecution by undesirable people. The flying of the national upside down may not be intentional and we had seen this happened many times, even in parades and sport events. It is insane for anyone to disrespect the national flag.

A true soldier also never wish to show any disrespect to the flag of an enemy, what more to show disrespect to own country’s flag. A soldier knows in laws of war and humanity, it is disrespectful to use the enemy’s flag to lure his enemy out from hiding with his enemy’s flag - see Brussels Declaration on the Law of War 1874.

Therefore, to use the flag of own country which can provoke or give rise to racial and political tensions in multi-racial, multi-religious and multi-cultural society, is a show of disrespect to own country’s flag.

It is a nuisance and could be a crime or should be criminalized.
If persons like Dr. Akmal wants to pick some needles about the Malaysian flag, there could be many. The stripes of the Malaysian flag is white and blue and we all know this, but, what is the true or correct white or blue colour of the flag? Exposed to the sun, the colours of the flag may fade.

There are many white colours because not all whites are the same. Likewise, what is the correct blue colour of the Malaysian flag, many if not, most Malaysians don’t know. Again, I think, many if not most manufactures and Malaysians do no know the official size of each stripe of the flag or how big the official size of the flag should be.

I doubt Dr. Akmal himself knows the correct Malaysian flag.

Overtime, the flag flown may also be torn by the wind. Should we pick such a thing to say it is disrespectful to have flown torn flags by the wind which the owner may not be aware?

The Malaysian flag, known as the Jalur Gemilang, was designed by Mohamed Hamzah, a young architect from Johor. He won a national design competition for the flag in 1949. The flag underwent some modifications after the initial design, including changes to the stripes and the star, before its official adoption.

Sarawakians may wish to know the Jalur Gimilang in fact, is the flag of the federation of Malaya and now it is the flag of Malaysia.

According to records in the United Nations Secretariat, Malaya was enlarged after Singapore, Sarawak and Sabah were acquired under the dubious Malaysia Agreement 1963 as territories of Malaya. This flag of Malaya, then, became the flag of Malaysia.
