KUCHING: Parti Bumi Kenyalang (PBK) president Voon Lee Shan has described the proposal by Putrajaya to sell Petronas stakes to Sabah and Sarawak as an “insult” to the people. “Why should Sabah and Sarawak need to buy the resources that belong to them?

“Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad should know that the Petroleum Development Act (PDA) 1974 and the signing away in perpetuity of Sarawak’s oil and gas are invalid in law,” he said at a press conference at his office here today.

Asking Sabah and Sarawak to buy stakes in Petronas would be equivalent to treating both states as colonies and not as equal partners, he said.
Voon also urged the Sarawak government to no longer hold any meeting with the federal government concerning the state’s oil and gas resources.

Sarawak Chief Minister Abang Johari Openg is not empowered to give way to demands, requests or suggestions of the prime minister to buy stakes in Petronas, he said.

“Abang Johari is reminded that he holds an oath of office to protect the property and people of Sarawak.”
Voon said if Putrajaya disagreed about giving back Sarawak’s resources, it would be the political duty of the chief minister to inform the prime minister that the union with Malaya is no longer “meaningful” and Sarawak is prepared to exit from the federation of Malaysia.

“After all, the federation of Malaysia is viewed by many as a fraud,” he added.

In fact, Voon said there were many political and legal grounds that could justify the exit from the federation under domestic and international law.
He said the fact that the federal government has refused to amend Article 1(2) of the Federal Constitution to include the words, “in pursuant to the Malaysia Agreement 1963” was evidence that the federal government had very little respect for the existence of Sabah and Sarawak in the federation.

He said Sarawak had contributed a lot of revenue to the federation in terms of its oil and gas but received very little in return from Putrajaya.

Voon said Petronas had, for the past five decades, made much money from the state’s oil and gas resources.

“As reported in the local media on March 8 this year, Petronas had recorded a profit after tax of RM55.3 billion on the back of revenue of RM251 billion for the financial year 2018.

“The total assets of the company had increased to RM636.3 billion, making Petronas one of the largest companies in the world,” he said.

Therefore, it could not be denied that Sabah and Sarawak had contributed to the huge prosperity of Petronas, he said.
