The territory of Sabah and Sarawak in North Borneo gained independence for a few weeks before being forcibly merged with Malaya on September 16th 1963.
Ever since, Sabah and neighbouring Sarawak have been used as ‘cash cows’ for the Federal Government I.e. most of the oil revenues from those areas are spent via Kuala Lumpur (capital of Malaya/sia). In return Sabah are flooded with economic migrants from the region, which the Government readily gives citizens rights too, and is slowly turning the indigenous people/cultures into a minority.
Sedition Act
The Sabah/Sarawak diaspora hold an annual demonstration in London calling for independence. This year they were opposing the Sedition Act which Malaysian politicians have tried to use to silence patriots. A new Act is being prepared which many fear with specifically bans secession.
Activists supported by Nations without States were outside Downing Street today and handed in a 120,000 petition calling for Sabah independence.
